KEENER DEMAND FOR BEEF " 1 i MARKET AT FRANKTON. 1 I ) SHEEP IMPROVEMENT SUSTAINED, j A considerably more buoyant tone was evident at the weekly stock sale at Franklon yesterday, especially for beef of all descriptions. The substantial improvement for sheep that was recorded last week was sustained without difficulty, both wethers'-and ewes being keenly sought. The growing scarcity of ox beef was no doubt responsible for the enthusiastic inquiry that prevailed right through this section, buyers displaying an. obvious desire to fulfill® their requirements even at prices considerably in excess of last week.- Although the cattle were not extra heavy there was a good measure of quality, and medium sorts sold readily under brisk, competition. Good quality sorts, sold ,up to £lO 15s, easily the best price recorded at -the yards this winter, and stated to be the best price re'ceiyea since last September. A keen demand was also evinced for all classes of cow and heifer beef, a full bench of buyers maintaining brisk competition both for the -good quality consignments as well as the rougher sorts. Extra choice young 'cows and heifers improved by ;2s per 1001 b. prime cows toy 2s, and second quality cows toy 3s. Light cows and heifers improved by 2s per 1001 b. The same eager inquiry that was apparent in the beef section was also "forth coming in tho sheep section. Little difficulty was experien'oed in maintaining last week’s improved level, good competition being shown for air classes. Wethers agaiivmet a good market, while a substantial improvement was reoorded for ail classes of ewes, while lambs also attracted better prices than last week. Extra prime ewes improved- by 2s 9d per head, fat owes by Is Gd, and unfinished ewes by 3s. A small yarding of fat pigs was ; again yarded and competition was again keen witli good prioes being again recorded. A few toa'c oners which were included sold readily under a keen demand. Stores of all classes met a very satisfactory market, large stores selling lip to 325.

Individual Consignments.

In 'the ox beef section ’the /top price of £lO 15s was secured by Mr J. Hannon, of Cambridge, for an outstanding quality consignment. Other offerings from tliis vendor* sold from £9 IV-s Gd. to £lO. Mr G. A. Eyre, of Walmai, sold lighter offerings at prices ranging from £8 6s to £9 10s. The wellknown vendor, Mr T. M. Hall, of Ohaupo Road, sold bullocks for the 'se'cond top price of £lO 10s. In the cow and lleifer -beef -section Mr R. G, Griffin, -of Tauwhare, marketed 'cows from £7 to £7 4s and heifers from £0 17s to £7 6s. . Mr T.'M. Hall obtained an average of £7, while a consignment from the Paerangi Estate, of Te Puke, sold at prices ranging from £7 to £7 10s.

For a line of good quality wethers the Paerangi Estate secured the top price of 29s In the' sheep seotion. Other vendors jilso sucoeeded in obtaining this figure. An average of, 2ls 3d was received for a large line of extra prime ewes on account of a vendor, this being the best price recorded for ewes, •’ Messrs Van Houtte and Nowlette, of Te Uku, marketed wethers at an average of 28s 6d, while Messrs Taylor ?Bros., of Taupiri, received fid below this figure for their consignment, the same vendors selling hoggets at 21s 9d. For baconers in the pig section Mr p. Cramp, of Whatawhata Road, obtained an average of 64s,'while Is below ’ this figure was received by Mr F. Catloy, of Taupiri, for a similar consignment. For breeding sows vendors received up to £4 6s.

Farmers’ Auctioneering Company. The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report:— At Frankton sale yesterday there was a medium entry of fat sheep, with wethers in shorter supply than previous yardings, with the result that keener competition > N was apparent with a slight advance in values. Ewes were also yarded in shorter numbers, with our entry comprising mostly well finished lots. In accordance with the quality ttie market showed a slight improvement \vitli values firming. Well finished' ewes from Whewell Bros., of Tamahere, realised 22s 3d, while ewes from Mr H. S. Hawkins made 22s Od. A full yarding, mostly well Unished hoggets," with' competition also in this section good with the markdt firm. A smaller yarding than usual of ox beef was penned, good quality remaining in firm demand. Prime quality steers from Mr T. M. Hall, of Ohaupo Road, sold from ,£8 17s Gd to £lO 10s. There was a smaller yarding of cow and heifer beef, with a good proportion of finished cattle, quotations improving on late sales. Second quality also showed an appreciable advance in values. A smaller yarding of vealers and runners, witTi prices firm. ■ Runners from Mr A. Bethell sold from £2 15s to £4 ss. A small yarding of fat pigs came forward, with a medium entry of stores and weaners. Fat pigs were again competed for by a largo bench of buttermilk buyers, and late advanced rates for porkers were exceeded. Stores and weaners sold on a par with last week's rates. Quotations : ' . Messrs Dalgety and Co. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having held their weekly stock sale at Frankton saleyards yesterday as under: — Fat Sheep.—There was a medium yarding. Prices were very firm and last week’s advance was well maintained. Prime heavy wethers sold from 27s to 29s Gd, medium weight wethers 24s Gd to 2Gs Gd, light and unfinished wethers 22s Gd to 23s 3d. Heavy prime owes made up to 22s 3d, averaging round about 21s, light ewes 17s Gd to 19s. Fat Lambs.—A moderate yarding which sold at full late rates. Heavy butchers’ lambs made up to 245, medium weight well llnislied lambs 20s Gd to 22s 3d, light and unfinished lambs 17s 3d to 18s. Fat Cattle. —A. small yarding met with a very keen demand,' several outside butchers operating. Prices advanced sharply and fat bullocks were 20s per head and fat cows from 10s to 20s higher. Fat bullocks medium weight made up to £lO ss. Ox beef sold at equal to 25s to 2Gs Gd per 100 lb. Choice quality cows and heifers sold at equal to 24s per 1001 b. Fat P.A. heifers £6 to £6 3s, P.A. cows £4 15s, Jersey cows'light weights £3 15s to £4 7s Gd, unfinished light Jersey cows £2 2s to £3 ss, heavy runners £2 5s to £3 IGs, light do. 30s to 425. Store Cattle. —Boners made 24s to 30s, young store cows'JJSs to £2 10s, bulls to £4 ss, yearling Jersey heifers 15s to 27s Gd. Store Sheep—Only a few small pens yarded. Cull ewes in lamb made 8s Gd, empty cull ewes' 2s. Pigs. —A small entry of fat pigs and a good entry of stores came forward. Fat pigs sold at equal to late 1 rates, vwbllst stored sold under keen competition in advance of last week’s rates. Prices were as follows: Light baeoners £2 10s to £2 17s, buttermilk pigs £2 4s to £2 Jls, medium porkers 37s to £2 3s, light porkers and unfinished 32s to 38s, best stores 2Gs to 30s, slips 18s to 255, weaners 12s to IGs Gd. i N.Z. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Hamilion, report on their weekly Franklon stock sale, held on Tuesday, as tollows: — Cattle. —All classes of fat cattle participated in a substantial Improvement. Our ox beef entry was small,

also plain bullocks, but we yarded good numbers of good quality cows and heifers, together with about normal quantities of medium quullty cow and heifer beef, and of store cows. Bullocks sold at a wide margin above last week’s rates, whilst cows and heifers were keenly sought at much better prices. Medium class cows were proportionately higher too. Some choice runners and vealers sold well. We quote.—Small Jersey steers, £5 15s to £G 14s; light do., £5 8s to £5 12s Gd; small prime P.A. heifers, £5 15s to £6 ss; good quality cows and heifers, £A los to £5 12s 6d; lighter fat cows, £3 15s to £4 10s; ktllable Jersey cows, £2 12s Gd to £3 10s; fresh conditioned cows, 34s .to £2 ss; medium store, 26s to 325; boners, up to £1 4s; good runners, £3 9s to £3 14s; others, £2 10s to £3 4s; quality vealers, £1 14s to £2. Sheep.—Wethers comprised the principal part of a medium entry. A good demand was evinced in values maintaining late quotations and a complete clearance was effected in all sections. Heavy fat wethers, £1 6s 9d to £ 1 9s; medium, £1 5s to £1 6s 6d; smaller, £1 3s Gd to £1 ss; heavy lambs, 19s to 22s 9d; medium, 16s to 18s Gd; medium ewes, 15s to 16s 6d. Pigs.—Fat pigs were in small supplies, although numbers practically equalled those of the previous week. The market was strong at recent realisations. Store and weaner pigs, more particularly for slips and weaners showed a slight easing in values; there were medium numbers entered. We quote.: Light baeoners, £2 7s to £2 14s; medium porkers, £1 IGs to £2 ss; light porkers, £1 12s to £1 15s; targe store pigs, 24s to 275; mediffm, £1 Is to £1 3s; small, 18s to £1 Is; slips, 15s to 17s; weaners, up to 12s.

Messrs G. W. Vercoe, Ltd. Messrs G. W. Vercoe and Go., Ltd., report:— At our weekly stock sale.at Franktou to-day we penned fat sheep in average numbers. The demand throughout was keen and a total clearance of all classes was effected at rates considerably firmer than those which have been ruling for the past few months Sixty prime wethers ex Paerangi Estate sold up to 295, while Messrs Van Iloutte and Nollett, of Te IJku, received an average of 28s Gd for 3G prime wethers.
