The Governor-General (Lord GalWay) will visit Christchurch to perform the official opening of the Canterbury Winter Show and Exhibition on Saturday, August 10. His Excellency has consented' to allow his speech to be broadcast.
Sir Alexander Herdman, who has been on a visit to the South, travelled to Frankton by the limited express yesterday and later went to Rotorua.

Mr Bernard Rumsey, of ffrlsbane, 1 who has been appointed assistant to the vicar of Cambridge, the Rev. G. Chandler, arrived at Auckland'from Sydney by the Monterey to-day.
Mr C. M, Cdlllns, of'Messrs Wright,, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., Hamilton, will leave to-night for Wellington, where he will relieve for a month.
Mr E. C.' Carter, secretary-general of the Institute of Pacific Relations, who has been touring New Zealand, will leave Auckland for San Francisco to-day by the Monterey.

Mr J. A. W. Bennett and Mr John Mulgan, formerly of Auckland University College, have obtained first-class honours in English at Oxford University. Both have been at'Merton College. jMr Bennett went to Ox-ford in ,1933 on a travelling scholarship.
According -to cabled advice, Mr Douglas. D. Porter, general secretary of the J3gypt General Mission, died in London on Thursday as *the result of a ffiotor accident.' Mr Porter toured New Zealand in 1932 and again in 1933 in. the interests of the mission, and made many friends in all parts of the Dominion, . ■■■ *'"
,Mr Brian O.’Horkc, . who was entrusted with thq whole of-the Interior decoration of the; new Orient liner Orion, is a native of Christchurch, lie took degrees in engineering and architecture at Cambridge, and has won a number of prizes awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architectsjind the Architectural Association*.
The Hon. R. Masters, Minister of' Industries and • Commerce, stated.'today that Mr L. J. Schmitt, who was recently appointed permanent head, of 'the department, had been* appointed chairman of the Wheat Purchase Board in succession to Mr Qi W. The assistant-director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture;* Mr W. T. Goodwin, has been seconded for a term of duty with the Cook islands Administration, and at an early date he will take up the appointment of director of agriculture for the Cook 'lslands, with headquarters at Rarotonga. lie will exercise supervision over the other islands. He will leave Wellington for Rarotonga on September 3. ■
