RESCUE FROM DROWNING.
PLUNdE INTO FLOODED RIVER. WiHANGAHOA, Friday. A brave and successful attempt to save a man from drowning in the flooded Kaeo River was made yesterday morning by a. young man, Mr D. King. Mr King was passing through the township on horseback when he heard Mrs E. Johns, the wife of his employer, a baker, call out that a man was being swept down the river. Mrs Johns had chanced to look from a •window' to see whether the safety of her ducks was threatened by the flood, when she was amazed to see a man's head appear momentarily in the torrent. Galloping immediately to the river bank. Mr King plunged into the water and swam 23yds. to where Mr J. B. Watson, of Kaeo. was clinging to the branch of an overhanging willow' tree. Mr Watson had attempted to cross the river about 100yds. upstream when he was swept from his horse. Hampered by gumboots and an oilskin coat, he w-as not able to reach the shore, and was almost exhausted when Mr King reached him. Mr King swam w r ith Mr Watson to the opposite shore, where Mr Watson was immediately given assistance.
