HAMILTON CLUB.

THE CAPTAIN’S TROPHY. SECOND ROUND PLAY. (By "Niblick.") The second round of the Captain’s Trophy was decided at St. Andrews last Saturday. Conditions were not very pleasant, especially for those who started late, as a cold wind was blowing from the south-east and rain'was falling most of the afternoon. ' The links were on the heavy side with little run on the ball. The new 7th green was In use and the general oomment appeared to be favourable. The direotlon of the wind was of some assistance to the tee shots and the seconds, with the result that the approach in many cases could be dropped to the green over the guarding bunkers on the left. The grass seems to be well established and should receive much benefit from the recent rains.

Sutcliffe, Wake and Blaokle suffered defeat In the second round at the hands of Palmer, Atkins and Shakeshaft. Palmer is a long handicap player who appears to have Improved quite appreciably this season. Atkins owes Ills win chiefly to his putting, which was deadly accurate from all distances, giving. Wake no chance of holding on and conceding two strokes. Blackie had an off day, but Shakeshaft is always a dangerous opponent. The loser had difficulty in getting up to the green and fluffed many shots which is unusual for him.

Matoh AII,Sqi/are. Edmonds was lucky to' finish all square with Duxfleld. The former had a putting lapse on most of the greens while Duxfleld was very accurate. Both players gave many chances at ■different stages. Edmonds played belter in the re-play, which lie won. Do Latour is another long handicap man who lias Improved recently. He accounted for D’Arcy Smith on Saturday. In the vlce-oaptain’s matoh T. Simpson went under to J. F. Strang after a good match. Johnstone was playing Ids long game well and created rather a surprise by defeating Kissling. Frost,'who is a now member and is capable of good golf, had a narrow win over Shaw. E. Wilson was much too good on the day for Loveridgc, who has had some good scores recently. There are now 32 players left In each or these matches and the next round to he- played on Saturday may give some indication of the likely winners.

Town v. Country. i The names of the players to repre- ' sent the town clubs have been forwarded to this club. The clubs represented find the number from each are: Auckland 0, Titirangi i, MuungakioUic 1, Hemuera 3. Akarana 3, Olendowte 2, North Shore 2, and Otahuhu ‘2 — i;i total of 2 11 . of which number only five players have handicaps of over Jl .

four. It appears that the country clubs will have a big hurdle In front of them. Details of players avallablo are still awaited from, several clubs before the team to oppose the town men can be announced. The matoh is to take place -on August 18 at Hamilton.

South Auckland Tournament. The annual championship tournament will take place this year as usual during the last three days of August. The dates unfortunately clash with Rotorua, but wo have not in recent years had any entries from players who competed in that tournament. It is possible that some who are shut out. of the Rotorua entry may decide to come to Hamilton. The South Auckland Championship will be decided, the holder being J. L. Black, and there will also be the St. .Andrews Handicap match play event.

AH tFranklln vVHamllton. On August 4 the return match with the Franklin Association will be play* ed at Hamilton.
