MARIE TEMPEST.
SUCCESSFUL STAGE JUBILEE. KING AND QUEEN PRESENT. In the course of their Jubilee celebrations, the King end Queen attended the matinee at Drury Lane in honour of Mario Tempest’s stage jubilee. The performance began with a ballet, “Sleeping Beauty,” enchantingly danced by Markova and Harold Turner. Then Georgo Robey sang characteristic ditties as the curate with the mourning eyebrows. Scene From “Marriage of Kitty. With vigorous applause, culminating In oheers, the crowded audlenoe anticipated Miss Tempest’s entry In Act 11. of “The Marriage of Kitty.”
She played her famous part of i'9o2 perfectly, and the play’s old-fashioned quality helped to prove how rare are Miss Tempest’s gifts. There was an all-star cast for the scene from Act 111. of “Little Catherine,” in which Miss Tempest was the dying Empress, and more than 200 leading players of the London stage took part In “The Players’ Masque for Marie Tempest,” by John 'Drinkwatcr. Miss Tempest was “chaired” from her throne at the back of the stage to the footlights, where she was presented with a deed in perpetuity of a Marie Tempest ward to be added 'to St. George’s Hospital with the funds raised by this matinee.
At. a reception on Hie. stage afterwards, Miss Tempest said, when her health had been drunk amid cheers, “You ought to see Hie photographs their .Majesties have given me—signed, framed—like Ibis.” She held out her arms to show 11 io I I lie portraits were large. Miss Tempest saw llieir Majesties in ; I lie. 'ante-room to Hie royal box just ! before Urn performance. Site presented the (Juecu with a box of chocolates.
