Farmers’ Absurd Demands.
The Economist states that there ar« two possible ways out of the present impasse. / One is to restrict production and the other to lower prices until demand and supply again coincide. The farmers are demanding a drastic restriction of imports of dairy produce in order lo raise the price for and diminish the loss on “ manufactured ” inilk or, alternatively, an increase and extension of the • present subsidy in aid of the price of “ manu-” factured ’’ milk. It is only in the economics of Bedlam that either project could be considered, the Economist continues. / ,
The milk marketing scheme as originally formulated had much to commend it and it would be a very great pity if it Were to collapse. But it will collapse unless Us 160,000 constituents abandon their demand that it shall achieve economic impossibilities.
The question of whether the scheme is to be continued is to be submitted to a poll of milk producers early next month. _________
