OBITUARY,

MRS ELIZABETH MAIN WARING. EARLY TE AWAMUTU RESIDENT. (Special to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Monday. The death occurred on Saturday of one of the oldest residents of the Te Awamutu district, Mrs Elizabeth Mainwaring at the age of 90_ years. She was of high rank in the Ngala-Mama-poto and Ngata-Ngutu tribes, a people closely identified with this part of the country for many years. She had been in falling health for some time and her death was not unexpected. Only recently, however, she gave an interview to members of the Te Awamutu Historical Society, when she imparted a great deal of useful and littleknown knowledge about the early history of the district. She was born in Te Awamutu and lived in the neighbourhood for 90 years. As a schoolgirl? she attended a mission school conducted by the Rev. John Morgan, the pioneer missionary, and at a later stage she went to live with Commissioner John Gorst and Mrs Gorst. She was married 73 years ago to Mr Rowland L. Mainwaring ,an Englishman, who, coming out to the colonies some time previously to visit his brother, a resident magistrate, had made his Ye, Awamutu headquarters with the Gorsts. After the wedding they made their home at Whatawhata where Mr Mainwaring had acquired land. They lived there for several years subsequently going to Cambridge and back to Kihikihi which was Mrs Malnwaring’s home for half a century. When Mr Mainwaring settled at Kihikihi in 1884 he soon became identified with local body affairs, serving for some considerable time as clerk and treasurer of the Kihikihi Town Board and of the Kihikihi Domain Board.

Mr Malnwaring diet} about nine years ago and the only surviving member of a family of five is Mrs W. J. .North, of Te Awamutu. The funeral look place this afternoon at the Kihlicihl cemetery.

MR THOMAS EDWARD TEBBS

With the death on Saturday of Mr Thomas Edward Tebbs, another pioneer of the Wakato has passed away. The late Mr Tebbs would have been 88 years of age on Sunday.

Born in County Shropshire, England, in 1847, deceased early followed the pursuits of his parents, and went on the land. After farming in the County for about 20 years he came out to New Zealand, settling in Auckland and sending for his family within a year.

Early in 1870 he took up land at Morrinsville, and after farming there for many years he came to Hamilton and farmed the property where tho Waikato Hospital now stands. Later he managed Beerescourt for Mr C. 11. Hume. In later years deceased combined road-contracting and farming, and for Iho pasL 40 years has resided in Norton Hoad. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Mr A. Tebbs, of,llam--1 lion, and Mr E. J. Tebbs, of Frankton, and one daughter, Mrs K. Golhorp, of Rolotuna. There arc 17 grand-child-ren and two great grand-childrcn.
