BADMINTON
GAMES IN WAIKATO. i i i ' WKBT END V. BT. MARK’B. I VISIT OF AUCKLAND TEAM. j j (By “ Sideline.”) Although the West End A team is by no means a strong one it was rather a surprise to see them so severely trounced by St. Mark s. Vv lthout detracting from the merit of St. Mark’s win there is no doubt the West End players were all at sea in the low hall and none of them showed the form of previous matches. The To Aroha players have developed their game to suit the conditions and in their own hall both Crawford and Johnson are hard; to beat in either men’s doubles or combines. In the ladies’ doubles Miss Mueller and Miss Sorby played well in patches and had they been more consistent might have beaten the top pair as well as ; defeating the bottom players. Mrs Lamb and Mrs Colson were both too', slow in moving about the court. The outstanding Te Aroha lady was Miss Pilling who seems to be playing better than ever this season. Miss Heathcote does not seem to be playing as well and it is doubtful whether Miss Maingay might not be a better partner for Miss Pilling. Best Men’s Pair. Johnson and Crawford were the best men's pair on the night, although there was not much to spare in their match with Bryant and Macklow. As a pair Lamb and Edmonds were definitely work though both showed improved form in the combined doubles. SI. Mark’s have a promising boy in Lewis, but. he is too inclined to Icy for spectacular shots instead of relying on shots that, although, they might not appear so g'ood as the others, ere more likely to win points. Auckland-Walkato Match. An Auckland-Waikato match has been arranged for July 27 at 'Hamilton. The match will bo played in the Blcdisloe 'Hall and the meeting of two strong teams in such ideal conditions •should provide a feast of good badminton. Of the Auckland team, 0. Martin is probably the best known. lie has held the Dominion singles chain-' pionship on a number of occasions and. for hard and accurate smashing, it would be hard to find his peer in New Zealand. M. T. Wilson, the wellknown tennis player and the present holder of the Auckland badminton singles title, is also making the tr'-p and, after his defeating .Martin in I."M season’s- Auckland championships lm can be reckoned to. be one of the hr.-.! playing at the .present time. Of toother men J. Neale is well known h the Waikato, being the present holder of the Waikato, singles title and Hull has-also b'edrh there previously. The ’latter player,is also co-holder of Ihc men’s doubles championship and Hie New Zealand combined doubles championship. Btrong Ladles’ Team. The first two Auckland ladies, Miss Ellet and Miss Ramsay have both held the New Zealand ladies’ litle at different times, the former being Ihc present holder. Last season, Miss M. Wado was showing particularly fine form until a bad fall in Ihc Waikato championships damaged her ankle so that this season it will not be surprising if she is in the running when Hie various championships are held. The remaining ladies are all strong players. Miss K. Waters being a particularly bright exponent at the net in combined doubles. Owing lo Hie large number of courts available badminton history will bo made by Hie. playing oT a match of representative A and B teams at Ihc one time.
