EPSTEIN NUDES.

SELECTED FOR MELBOURNE. WILL THEY BE ACCEPTABLE? The two Epstein statues from Rhodesia House, in London, for 'Melbourne, will be selected from a number ot nudes, and it is possible that patrons of tlie National 'Gallery, Melbourne, and the Castlemainc Gallery will be just as critical of them as were the people of London who objected to them “profaning” The Strand.

Senator Elliott said in Melbourne that all the statues were really beautiful. but he explained that when they were first erected in London the ■city, was not sufficiently advanced artistically to appreciate their beauty.

Senator Elliott added that much of Hie resulting -controversy had been inspired by Epstein, the sculptor, himself.
