THE HAMILTON CLUB. j _____ I | A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. j MR HOLLOWAY NEW PRESIDENT. ; | A year attended by a considerable : measure of success was reviewed at ] the thirty-fourth annual meeting of | the ’Hamilton Bowling Club last evening. Interest in the club’s affairs was reflected in The- attendance of about AO members, the president, Mr W. 13. Pomeroy, presiding. A number of apologies were received. The annual report and balancesheet, which were published last Saturday, were adopted. Mr Pomeroy, in retiring from Hie position of president, said he had •greatly enjoyed his term of office. 'He expressed appreciation to members for the confidence they had placed In him and for the manner in which they had loyally co-operated with The committee during the year. He considered' the club was a strong one, with traditions which he felt sure would be carried on In the future. Mr 'R. Parr, an original member of the club, congratulated the president and committee on being able to show a credit balance for what he believed to be the first time in the club’s history.
On the motion of Mr W. Horton, It was unanimously resolved that appreciative references to the services of the secretary, (Mr 'R. E. 'Conrad!; treasurer, Mr L. O. Barton; and solo selector, Mr J. Varney, be added to the annual report.
Sound Flnanolal Position.
Commenting on the balance sheet, Mr L. Redmond complimented the committee on Its excellent showing. There had been no unnecessary expenditure during the year and receipts had shown an increase owing to Increased membership. He felt confident that the position would be even better next year.
Mr S. B. Sims expressed the opinion that the -sum of £34 for general and water rates was excessive and the committee should take steps to effect a revaluation or to have the rates reduced.
The president assured Mr Sims that the committee would go into the matter.
Replying to Mr N. Bell, senr., Mr •Pomeroy said the committee intended cancelling the joint-and-soveral guarantee entered into by certain members •some years ago. A resolution authorising Hie committee to take such action was carried.
A vote of thanks Lo Iho guarantors was passed.
Appreciation of the work of those who had assisted in the successful functioning of the club during the past year was expressed by the president, who also congratulated Mr P. ill. Rowe on the honour conferred upon him In his election to the Dominion Bowling •Council. The trophies won during the past year were presented by the president, who congratulated the successful players on their achievements. The trophy winners were as follows: Champion singles, W. Robinson; champion rink, G. Plummer. 'G. Wilkes, (R. Metcalfe, N. Bell (s); handicap pairs, W. Crawshaw, G. Evitt (s) ; handicap singles, J. Gamble; Wilson Shield rink, 11. Raven, L. Redmond, W. B. Pomeroy. S. R. Ilawkcn (s). Election of Officers. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Mr 'C. Jf. Holloway; vice-president, Mr L. G. Barton; secretary, Mr 'R. <K., 'Gonradi; treasurer, Mr S. L. Sea,rell; .management committee, Messrs A\ r . Adams, G. Plummer. A. Osborne; green superintendent, .Mr G. W. Hyde; delegates ■to South Auckland 'Centre’ -Messrs P. 11. Rowe, W. B. Pomeroy, 'C. H. Holloway; delegates to Waikato Bowling Association, 'Messrs W. M. Horton, H. B. Conradl; selector, (Mr J. Varney; auditor, Mr (H. H. Leak; coach and umpire, Mr N. Bell;-press correspondent, Mr .T. Qualtrpugh. Prior to vacating the chair Air Pomeroy commented upon the harmony which had existed among the committee and other officers during the pasT year, and he expressed the hope that the same state of affairs would continue.
Whether a match committee or a •sole selector should be appointed was debated, the meeting unanimously favouring a sole selector. The selector was authorised to appoint two assistants If he so desired.
'ln a.report on behalf of the match committee Mr J. Varney said the club had had a very full season. Exclusive. -of tournaments, 17 inter-club matches were playi-*, 104 club rinks participating. The committee recommended the dropping of the handicap pairs competition and The playing of senior and junior championship pairs. The setting aside of one Saturday each month for the playing of a full rink competition of four rounds of one hour each was also recommended.
Mr Bell commended. the suggestion that a full rink game should.be played on every fourth Saturday, and said this was an enjoyable feature of last season's play.
Other speakers commented upon •similar lines, and the proposal was generally approved. The suggestion that senior and Junior championship pairs should be played, and the handicap pairs deleted provoked considerable discussion, but ihc consensus of opinion was in favour of the proposal. The question of giving every player a game was raised by Mr N. Bell, who said he would support the recommendation if this could he carried out satisfactorily.
“It is so interesting that I think we should give Mr Varney a free hand,” he. added.
A motion of thanks to Mr W. B. ;Pomeroy for his presentation of a trophy for (he handicap singles, was passed.
Extension of Pavilion. Mr Redmond suggested Hint Ihe rule dealing with the date or the e,lull’s annual meeting should-‘be amended to allow [he meeting lo he hold earlier in the year. He considered that tho attendance would be greater ir tlm meeting were held shortly after, the close of the season.
Mr Pomeroy pointer! out that (ho accounts presented a difficulty in the way of an earlier meeting. Tile, balance sheet showed a. truer indication of the club's position If it closed in June,
The opinion was expressed by Mr j Horton that the time had arrived for j Ihe extension,of Ihe club’s pavilion,! and he suggested that this should bo considered by Ihc incoming committee. Similar views were voiced by Mr ; Wilkes, who said ho did not think the j object of the'club should be to creates a large credit balance. The comfort • of the members should be considered, j A largep pavilion could be erected for j £3OO or £4OO, and provision might, also he made for dancing, which I would return revenue.
Mr Pomeroy said this matter had been considered by the outgoing committee and it had not been lost sight of. , Mr N. Bell contended that, the lime was not. opportune for expenditure on the lines suggested.
Other members supported the view •that, greater accommodation was necessary, and on the motion of Mr Sims it was decided that the incoming committee should consider a building scheme, Ihe chairman intimating that the committee’s proposals would be placed before a meeting of ’the club.
Votes of thanks lo the outgoing officers concluded ihe meeting.-
