LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION.

TWO CANDIDATES LIKELY. GOVERNMENT AND LABOUR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. It Is now almost certain that Mr James Thorn will be the Labour candidate at the forthcoming Lyttelton by-electton, and that Mr M. E. Lyons will be the Government candidate. At the general election in 1925 Mr Lyons stood against the late Mr J. McCombs, M.P. for Lyttelton, and was declared elected on the casting vole of the returning officer, and later he was given a majority of eight votes on a magisterial recount. Four months after the election he was unseated by a decision of an Electoral Court owing to the registrar enrolling electors beyond the boundary. Mir iMcCombs was then declared elected by a majority of 11 votes.

Mr Thorn is well known in the Labour movement, being at one time president of the party and later national secretary.
