The striking longshoremen and •ympathlsers, Including women, battled with the police for three hours on Tuesday afternoon In an area of ten city blocks, following an attempt by the longshoremen to march on to the Ballantyne pier, where members of another union were working deep-sea vessels. Eight police and at least nine civilJans -yvere admitted to hospitals, and scores suffered minor injuries. . The police used tear gas and clubs, the strikers replying with rocks and other missiles. Thirteen were arrested. Following the dispersal of the march against the pier, street lighting at various places over a large area developed, and blood ilowed freely from • cut heads, as the fighting raged through streets, alleys and yards. Isolated policemen were badly beaten when they were met, while the strikers suffered the same fate from the police.
