SHEEP RATES RISE. ■■ —--a BACONERS EASIER. U ' iFAT STOCK AT WESTFIELD. There was a much larger yarding of cattle at the weekly Westfield fat stuck sale yesterday, the number ottered being little short at' IUUU. The increased supply of ox beet was ot guoil quality and competition was again very steady, with values Hilly up to liiuse of last week, ‘2 is per JOO lb. for extra choice ox beef at limes being exceeded. The heavy yarding of cows and heifers also met with a ready sale, all well-finished lines realising late rates. Hough and inferior sorts were in rather less demand and prices" for these tended to be lower. The offering of calves was a full one and a brisk inquiry prevailed throughout, all classes being disposed of at recent improved prices. Toward the end of the sale rougher calves were selling well.

The yarding of sheep was the smallest for sonic time, and was hardly up to requirements. In consequence, bidding was very spirited and values for all sorts made a further improvement of between Is and 2s a head, the firmer tendency being most marked in the case of ewes.

Pigs were again offered in good numbers, with a large proportion of well-ilnlshed baconers. For these the demand was hardly as keen as it was last week and quotations were a shade lower. Porkers met with very erratic competition, recent rates being well exceeded in a number of eases, particularly for heavy sorts, while lighterweight and unfinished pigs were fully is lower iu price- The price per lb. over the whole sale worked out at from fxl to bid for both porkers and baconers. Store pigs were in short supply and these again sold well at fully iale rates. Quotations Compared. Individual Consignments. Top price in the ox beef market (£11) was realised for the best of two trucks of very prime steers from Messrs Trewin Bios., of Alaungatorolo. South Auckland Consignments. A consignment from Mr W. J. Ralph, of Maiiula, made to £9 7s (id. Up to 118 12 s Od was secured l'or a consignment from Mr W. A- Jefferis, of Wae 1 renga. In Hie cow ami lieifer market tho best price, £6 17s Od, was obtained for we'll-ilnished heifers from Messrs Thompson and Ernest, of Whakatanc. A good line came from Mr .1. A. Hill, of Oliincwai, the best of three trucks selling from £0 fas. From Air J. Polilen, of Matamata, came a truck which made to £G, while for an even line from Mr B. 11. Nolan, of Cambridge,, up to £5 15s was paid. For heifers of the estate of D. Cameron, of Onewhero, and Mr 11. Windsor, of Malangi, up to £5 7s Gd was obtained and £4 12s Gd was the top price obtained for the cows of Air 11. D. Cox, of To Awnmutu. Other good lines were those of Air A. E. Sanderson, of Te Kauwhata, which made to £4 10s, and of Mr B. L. Orr, of Ohinewai, and the Matarawa Land Company, Putaruru, for which up to £4 7s Gd was paid.

Loan and Mercantile. The New Zealand Loan and Alereanlile Agency Company, Limited, reports:—Our yarding of beef was average. Competition was keen and values were very firm, if not better than tale rates. Pigs were penned in loss than average numbers. Values were firm on last week’s quotations. No extra heavy baeoners were penned. Dalgety and Co. •Reporting on yesterday’s Westfield slock sale, Messrs Dalgety and Company state that they yarded 283 head of cattle, comprising 70 steers and 213 cows and heifers against 259 head last week. TAUIWARUNUI WINTER EWE FAIR. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report:—At the Winter Ewe Fair, held at, Taumariunii, fully the advertised number of sheep came forward, our entry comprising 10,000 head of sheep. There was a large attendance of local and outside buyers and strong competition throughout, especially for good-mouthed, strong-constituted sheep. HASTINGS SALE. ,n Y Telegraph- —Press Association.) HASTINGS, Wednesday. An cnlry of 128 l'al calllo uul up lo the usual' standard of quality came forward at to-day's sale at SI or I lord Lodge, and sold at rates generally on a

parity with recent sales. Export buyers took a large proportion of the lighter lines. About 700 store cattle sold steadily with little change in prices compared with last week. Fat sheep were in good supply and included some extra prime heavy pens of ewes and wethers, the entry generally showing improvement In quality. However, the prices realised were unchanged. Store sheep sold very well, with strong competition, particularly for bi’eeding sheep, and values rose accordingly. Values were:—Fat cattle: Bullocks, medium to prime, to £9 6s; others, from £5 15s; heifers, medium to prime, £4 17s Gd to £6 ss; others, from £3 ss; cows, medium to prime, £4 2s Gd lo £6; others, from £2 12s Gd. Store sheep: Ewes, mixed ages, to 255; wethers, to 20s; wether hoggels, to 17s Id. CLEARING SALE AT KEREONE. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Hamilton, report having held a clearing sale at Kereone yesterday on account of Mr B. Harnett. The herd of approximately 70 cows came forward in fairly good condition and included a number of cows in milk. We aiso offered a number of in-calf heifers, as well as 3 horses and some farm implements. Throughout the sale lairiy even competition was maintained at values showing no variation from recent rates. There was a large bench of buyers from the surrounding districts, who were mostly interested in the belter class cows. Some of the more backward heifers were mol so well sought after, but forward ones sold satisfactorily. The sundries were well competed for. We quote:—Good Jersey cows close to profit £3 to £6 ss; medium class Jersey and Jersey cross cows, £3 15s to £4 15s; backward mixed colored cows up |,o £3 I 0s; Good Jersey cows in milk, £3 10s lo £4 15s; in-calf Jersey heifers, close, £3 13s to £4 ,13s; later do-, £3 3s Lo £3 12s Gd; brown gelding, £23; Cambridge roller, £10; drill, £0 Ills; slacker, £3 10s.

CLEARING SALE AT ROTOTUNA. Messrs G. W. YercuC and Go., Lid., report having held a clearing stile at Rololuna yesterday oil account of Mr T. Blackett. The cows came forward in good condition and met with a ready sale at advanced rales. The usual farm sundries sold on a par with rates

which have been ruling at other clearing sales.

We quote: Good quality Jersey cows, early calvers, £5 15s to £7 10s; good quality later calvers, £4 10s to £5 12s 6d; unsound cows, £3 to £4 ss; Shorthorn cows, early calvers, £4 to £5 15s; others, £3 10s to £3 17s 6d; cows In milk, £4 to £5 15s. The farm horses sold up to £34. CLEARING SALE AT PUKEATUA. Messrs Dalgety and Company Limited report having held a clearing sale of dairy stock, etc., on account of Mr G. L. Crowley on his property at Puketua on Monday. There was a fair attendance and a total clearance was effected at full market rates. The following arc the principal prices obtained: —165 S.M. ewes in lamb, 25s Id; 2-shear Southdown rams, ligns.; light harness gelding, £ll 10s; aged farm gelding, £5 15s.
