' T Altogether 450 bodies—a large proportion being those of children—'have been recovered in the flooded areas about 40 miles to the south of Mexico City. Cloudbursts had sent the Actopan River raging oyer its banks. Two hundred people entered a church seeking shelter, but the building became flooded and then collapsed, many of those inside being drowned or crushed in the ruins. There are more than 250 dead at San Pedro and 150 at San Gregorio. Indians armed with rifles stopped rescue parties. They said the flood was a divine visitation aimed at the Government’s anti-religious campaign, and they feared that their dead would [ l bs .taken, away (by soldiers.
