AUSTRALIA v. FRANCE.

THE OPENING SINGLES.

CRAWFORD AND BOUSSUS WIN. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. PARIS, June 8. The Davis Cup tie Australia versus France was begun to-day in Paris. The weather was line and warm, but gusty. There were 7000 spectators. The opening singles resulted as follows ;—Crawford defeated Merlin (France), o—4, 4—6, 6—3, 6—3; Boussus (France), defeated McGrath, 6_4, 2—6, B—6, 6—l. Although Merlin, in the first set, displayed more initiative Crawford won by forcing the Frenchman into errors. Merlin was brilliantly aggressive in the second set, which he won, though Crawford fought magnificently. Merlin led 2—i in the third, but Crawford levelled by winning his service, which he had frequently lost in the earlier sets. This seemed to restore the Australian’s confidence and he captured four successive games and then comfortably clinched the set. With a great variety of strokes Crawford unquestionably dominated the final set. Boussus scored with crisp drives to McGrath’s corners in the first set, which he won in spite of trouble in breaking through the Australian’s kicking angular service. The Frenchman’s errors cost him the second set. Both displayed determination in the third, which Boussus took after a great driving duel. The Frenchman was severely accurate in the final set. CRAWFORD AND QUIST WIN.

Cup doubles Crawford and Quist (Australia) defeated Borotra and Bernard (France), 6—2, 4 —6, 10 —8, 6—4. There were 10,000 cnpptfitnrsi Crawford was in excellent form, playing quietly but confidently. He dominated the Australian attack, 'his low volleying enabling the Australians to get to the net. Quis.t’s volleys were uncertain, but the Australians combined well. Bernard was obviously nervous at the start, but later in the match he served and smashed confidently. Borotra, bounding all over the court, volleyed in typical style, but he attempted to do too much. The Frenchmen captured the second set from 3 —4 behind with a run of brilliant shots. A Great Struggle. There was a great struggle in the third set. France led 5 —4, but Australia equalled, and, after breaking through Bernard’s service* took the set.

In the final set Bernard hardly made a mistake, but Borotra’s anxiety to make winners frequently caused him to net. Quist and Crawford smashed in great style. Excepting for the first set, when Bernard was over-awed, and parts of the second set, when Quist struck a bad patch, the tennis was scintillating.

POLAND ELIMINATED.

United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received June 10, 11 a.m.) WARSAW, June 9. In the Davis Cup competition, Farquharson (South Africa) defeated Tarlowski (Poland), 3 —6, 6—l, 7 —5, 6—3; Ledda (Poland) defeated Kirby (South Africa), 4—6, 6—4, 4—6, 6—l, 6—2. Poland was eliminated.
