The Auokland Racing Club’s 'Great Northern meeting concluded to-day at Ellerslie. Below Expectations. Croupier’s form at 'the Gtaki meeting did not come up to expectations. He is, of course, troubled by his wind, but, all the same, his party anticipated better things. Possibles.. Although P. ©avis states that nothing definite has been decided, it is on the cards that he will be making an Australian trip before the end of the ■winter with Heritage, Red Manfred and Co.. Again In Trouble. Master Brierly, when recently doing easy work, slipped, and wrenched his hind-quarters, comments an Australian exchange. Prior’to this happening it was intended to keep him in Work, but another holiday is now oompulsory. Checked Near the Six. The'Te Rapa trained Valpal was going well in the Remuera Hurdles at Ellerslie on Wednesday until he struok the fence near the six furlong peg along the back the last time. That mistake cost him considerable ground and put him out of the running. Golden Miller’s Trainer. England’s champion steeplechaser has been definitely taken over by D. G. Snow, who has hitherto trained some of Miss -D. Paget’s flat-racers. The addition of all Miss Paget’s jumpers to his team caused Snow to remove from Eastbury to larger training quarters at Ogburne;

Teams fop Australia. A. D. Webster will leave for Australia again on July 4 taking a team of six or seven horses that will include Prostration, Perfect Idea and two rising two-year-olds, 'Cigar, a gelding by Lord Quex —Vuelta, and Cayenne, a colt by ‘Lord Quex from Piquant. Should Do Better. Grand Sport was responsible for a clashing performance in the King George Handicap (7 furlongs) at Ellerslie on Wednesday and but for being slightly checked at the turn into the straight he may have made the winner's task more difficult. He was sticking to his work in the gamest possible fashion at the end. Not Numerous. Middle-distance handicap horses cannot be numerous in England. At Kempton Park on April 20 there were only nine runners for the Rosebery Stakes, li miles, worth £lll3 to the winner. The lightly-weighted Penny Hill '(son of Austin 'Friars) won by three lengths from the 11 to 4 favourite, Norman Herald.

Improved. Sporting 'Song won for the first time in his career at Otaki, and did so in Improved style. Hitherto his form has been only fair. This Hunting Song gelding may be coming right. His family is flrst-olass, his dam, Lionskin, being by Kilbroney from the great Treadmill mare Counterfeit. Was Finishing On.

Sir Musk, who is owned and trained at Te Rapa by W. Sharp, was finishing on in his engagement in the Panmurc Hurdles on the second day of the Auckland meeting and if lie remains sound he should soon commence to pay his way. He is a good fencer and with the easing of the tracks may not be long an absentee from the winning list.

Ruined HI9 Chances. The connections of Sandy Dix were confident of success on the second day of the Auckland meeting when the Sandstar gelding went out to contest the Hunt Club Cup. tout their expectations were shattered when the Cambridge .jumper hit a fence along the back and all but unseated his rider. C. Thomson. From then on he faded right out of the picture. June Hurdle Raoe. Sunward, winner of the June hurdle race at Dunedin, was bred at Flaxmere stud and is related to the promising hack Solaria, or rather Solaria is related to him, Sunward being an aged gelding by Lord Quex from Sundust, the dam of Sundew, the darn of Solaria. Sunward is raced by Mr C. L. Orbell. of South Canterbury, one of a family of hunting enthusiasts. Brood IVlaros Arrive. The brood mares Yalieare and Chorus, owned by Mr P. H. Osborne, of New South Wales, have arrived at the Eiderslic Stud from Sydney and both will visit Night Raid next, season. Vallcarc is the dam of Care Free and The Raider, the latter, by Night Raid, having been foaled in New Zealand. Chorus Is a brown mare bv Magpie from Pearl Necklace, by Tressldy from WalAnui, by Cooltrim.

Booked for August. G. W. New will be going to Australia again this year for the springracing, leaving here on August 2. He will take Legatee, Symeonv, Hunting (Mars, and an untried rising three-year-old gelding by Red Hunting (Hunting Song—Dodo). Dodo is by All Red from Ry By. the dam of those good horses Mark Time and Marque tour.

tVerden Disappoints. * After his forward showing in the Great Northern Hurdles up till the time he sold out at the fence near the three furlong post Verden’s exhibition in the , Remuera Hurdles on the second day of j the Ellerslie .meeting was a disappointing one. Over the latter stages • of the trip he was handily placed and j was actually on terms with Val Watch into the straight. From 'there on. however, Kc failed to go on with it and finished only a moderate fourth.

Wins Another National. •Last month Mrs F. A. Clark won another Grand National with Kellsboro’ Jack. This time it was the Scottish Grand National, of £7OO, 3 miles 7 furlongs, run at Bogside. There were six starters, and Kellsboro’ Jack, who' had 11.10, and was an even-money favourite, won easily by eight lengths. After Kellsboro’ Jack’s '193-3 Liverpool 'Grand National, Mrs 'Clark announced he was not 'to again run in 'the big race at AintrCe, and for the last two years he was not entered.

A Jumping Trotter. Judging by a sensational performance witnessed at Waterlea racecourse several weeks ago 'Blenheim has a Grand National winner in the making, although, it must be confessed, she is at present in training as a trotter. In fact the mare displayed her ability as a “timber topper” unexpectedly for she was being driven-on to. the course by a wellknown local light harness mentor when she suddenly took fright and bolted. The driver was leading another horse at the time and the sudden forward bound unseated him. To everyone’s surprise the scared animal cleared a rail fence on to the track and, with the sulky still in tow, proceeded to make no effort at all of a set of schooling jumps. It is stated that the runaway covered - four circuits over the “sticks" and still drew the somewhat battered sulky when finally stopped. 1

Victoria Grand National. Several New Zealand horses hay© been weighted for the Victoria Grand National Steeplechase, to be run at Flemington on July 13. The bestperformed of them is Billy Boy, winner of two Wellington Steeplechases and a Grand National, but Billy Boy's recent form has not been up to his past best. The topweight In the raoe is Reddi’tch, 1-2.7,. and Billy Boy’s weight is 10.'9. Membo is In at 9.9, and other entrants are; Verden, 10.2; Our Comet, 9.13; Actaeon, 9.9; Calydon, 9.8; Free Air, 9.5; and Arctic Region, 9.5, Membo,.who has left for Australia, gave great promise at the end of last steeplechasing season, and under his handy weight should make a really good showing. As he stays well, the journey (about three miles and a furlong) will suit him. lie has a lot in his favour if he jumps satisfactorily. Horses weighted for the Grand National Hurdle Race, to be run a week before the steeplechase, include- Shatter, 10.2; Verden, 9.12; Our Comet, 9.9; Galydon, 9.3; Arctic Region, '9.0; and Free Air, 9.0. Prismatic is top-weight with 11.5, and Baanya, whose riding-L. Dulieu was negotiating for, 'has 11.3.

Oratory Performs Well. The Demosthenes mare Oratress, in addition ’to being a first-class racehorse, has also made a great name for herself at the stud, being the dam of the New Zealand Cup winder Oratrix, the Auckland and Wellington Cup winner Concentrate, Oratorian, who cost 2400 guineas as a yearling, and others, all being winners. This family was again in the limelight on Monday when .Oratory was successful in the maiden raoe at the Otakl meeting. Oratory is a well-known light chestnut filly by Gainscourt, and was the fourth of Mr T. A. Duncan’s hitherto unraced two-year-olds to make a racing detout, the others having been Hippolyta and Ihapera at Woodville, and Entheos on the opening day at Otaki. The opposition to Oratory on Monday was by no means formidable, but she performed her task in impressive style, and her display of galloping ability, coupled with her breeding, suggests a future carer of high promise. The Luck May Change. A. E. Ellis has been offered the riding on the two-year-old Wei tan in Australia and is seriously considering making the trip. Ellis, however, Is almost afraid to make even tentative arrangements to go to Australia, as on no fewer than four previous occasions something has occurred that has compelled him to cancel arrangements on the eve of the proposed departure. He was engaged to go over to ride Bright Glow and other horses in 1929, hut was prevented by an injury. Then, two years later, when hooked to ride Autopay in the Epsom Handicap, which that iiorse won, he suffered a broken jaw and other injuries by a fall from Make Up in the Grand National Hurdles. Another two years later a broken arm, received when Snowfall fell with him at Riccarton, settled his chance of going across to ride Gaine Carrington and P.cter Jacksoh, while twelve months ago he had his luggage packed and his house let and occupied when, in the concluding event of the l Grand National meeting, lie met the displeasure of the stewards and was suspended for two months. He was to have ridden Silver Ring on this trip and that horse repeated Autopay’s winning performance in the Epsom Handicap.

WELL-KNOWN RACEHORSE. SOLD TO A CIRCUS. After spirited bidding between rival sideshow proprietors, Redlock, the racehorse which figured with Erbio in one of the most sensational cases in Australian turf history, was sold for £37 by the police at Melbourne. Redlock will end his days in a circus sideshow the owner of which is negotiating for the purchase of Krbie in South Australia.

Both horses have been disqualified from racing.

Two incidents in the principal race at the Auckland Racing Club & Winter Meeting at Ellerslie which resulted In considerable disappointment to backers. In 'the top pioture Master Musk is -seen on the ground ■after falling when in a handy position in the race. Below, Wee Pat, the favourite, is seen striking the first fenoe,. where J. H. Mcßae, her rider, was unseated, the horse aotually completing the course and- passing the winning post ahead of the field.
