STREET ACCIDENTS.
INCREASE DURING YEAR. ANALYSIS OF CAUSES. GREATER CARELESSNESS SHOWN (By Telegraph.—press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. That the primary cause of street accidents Is carelessness on the part of both car driver and pedestrian Is the conclusion drawn by the second annual report of the Street Accident Prevention Committee, based on a study of street accidents in Wellington during the year, in which poriod 894 accidents were reported, an Increase of 20 per cent, compared with tho previous year.
Some increase had been anticipated as there was a G 'per cent, increase in the volume of street, traffic, but the increase, states I lie report, was disturbingly high. Fatalities and serious injuries decreased, allhough minor personal injuries increased by 100 per cent. The number of fatalities was nine against seventeen the previous year, -but. minor personal injuries numbered 200 as against I ir>.
Saturday was still the most dangerous day, .Sunday being I lie least dangerous. The. most dangerous hour was between five and six o’clock in Ihe evening, oilier dangerous limes being between noon and one o’clock and between three and four in tho afternoon. The. number of accidents at. intersections increased but did not equal Ihe total of those at oilier points of I lie si reel.
