RAILWAY PIG YARDS.
IM PRO YEMENI'S REQUESTED Strong criticism of the condition of Llie To Awamutu Railway pig yards Was voiced by llie Te Awannutu branch of llie Fanners’ Union, in a resolution which came before the WailcaLo SubProvinclul executive of llie Farmers’ Union to-day. .Describing the state of the yards as disgraceful, the branch proposed that the chairman of the Railways Board, the Minister ot Railways, and the district traffic manager should tic approached with a request iluil concreting improvements should lie carried out in the yards. It was pointed out that approximately 1000 trucks of pigs were railed from Te Awamutu In the past year. Mr E. Wilson (Te Awamutu) said Liiat tho Te Awamutu yards were not the only yards in a bad state. Speaking lo pig buyers, he had been informed that a similar state of affairs prevailed at Otorohauga. Apart from tlio Insanitary conditions of these yards, llie thick layer of mud and other matter had a bad elTcct on the pigs when they had lo ■stand in the yards in wet and' cold weather. More and more pigs were being condemned through having pleurisy. The To Awamutu remit was supported by Major C. J. Pierce, who said that Hie conditions were entirely unwholesome. Farmers had been prosecuted for cruelty lo animals, but tills was present on a larger scale in these yards in I heir present state. Mr R. H. Felsst said that this was an important matter to-day in view of the growth of the pig industry The remit was carried.
