MEAT NEGOTIATIONS.

NOTE OF OPTIMISM. / . NEW ZEALAND’S STANDING. ' I ACTION BY AUSTRALIA. J (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. An optimistic note regarding the present meat negotiations in London was sounded by Sir William Perry at the annual meeting of sheep breeders at Massey College. ' Speaking as acting-chairman of the Meat Board, Sir William said: “ To the 'ordinary individual the negotiations now being 'carried on must appear to be rather vague, but I feel rather pleased at the way things are going. The New Zealand Government and the Meat 'Board have been very careful to try to meet' the Home Government. We have been very careful of that all through. “ New Zealand stands very high now through the fairness In the methods we have adopted In meeting the British Government. I cannot say that for Australia. They have been doing things that have not been quite fair. “In the quarter from January to March, they shipped a quantity which was double their quota. There is a tremendous lot of lamb going Home that is bound to lower the prices on the market. I have not the actual iigures but the position lias been very dangerous indeed. Even with 'the terrific quantity of lamb in London they had managed to keep prices from going very low. A Significant Remark. “ There is now a rise and Australia has been sending much that is likely ■to damage the market altogether. 1 think it was a very significant remark that Mr J. H. Thomas made when he said England was not to consider the future, as It was the past they had to deal 'on. “ Therefore I am satisfied JJiat Now Zealand is going to have a very good deal out of the whole Job. I do not feel at all perturbed about the position.”
