VALUE OF GOLD.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I am quite in agreement with the remarks regarding the constant value of gold made by Mr E. Earle Vaile in his letter in your Monday’s issue, and quote the following in support of it: Grote, in his history of Greece, ‘deals at some length with the money, .spent by Alexander the Great in financing his expedition for the conquest of Persia, and states that evidently, the value —i.e., purchasing power—of gold in Alexander’s time was practically the same as in his, Grote’s, time. Alexander's expedition was between 23 and 24 centuries ago; Grote wrote about a century ago.—l am, etc., A. WARBURTON. Ngaruawahia, May 28, 1935.
