In the final of the British amateur golf championship to-day, over 36 holes, W. L. Little, holder of the title, defeated William Tweddell, one up. Sixty-thousand people watched what was the best final for years. It was notable for Tweddell’s marvellous recovery. Little was three up at the end of the morning round, taking 73—the best round of the championship. Tweddell in sensational fashion won the first two holes in the afternoon. After that there was a terrific struggle. Little regained a lead of three, but the Englishman squared the match at the twelfth, with a perfect three. Tweddell then lost his chances of going ahead by putting poorly, and he was two down and three to play. Nevertheless, he halved the sixteenth and won the seventeenth amid tremendous excitement.

After playing a bunker shot to the edge of the'hole, Tweddell halved the last, but tliis gave Little the victory. Little equalled Hilton’s record of successive winds in 1900—1901.

Difficulty In Controlling Crowd. The stewards had great difficulty throughout the match in controlling the big crowd.

In the sixtli round Sweeney had defeated Halkcr at the nineteenth? Little had defeated Ilenriques, G and 4; Tweddell had defeated Fiddian, 1 up; and 'Torrance had defeated Dykes, at the nineteenth.

W. Lawson Little, who is a native of Rhode Island, United Slates, won tiic British and the American amateur championships last year. In the former he scored a record victory, defeating James Wallace 14 and 13. The ' runner-up, William Tweddell, Won the championship in 1927. He captained Britain against America in 1928, and played for England against Scotland, 1928-30.
