THE SHOOTING SEASON.
SPORT IN TE KUITI AREA, GOOD BAGS OBTAINED. The opening of the shooting season in the Te Kuiti district provided excellent sport, game being plentiful in every part of the district. After tha prolonged spell of dry weather it wfis not anticipated that any good bags of duck would be procured, but It was realised by local sportsmen- that the dry conditions had greatly Increased the breeding of pheasants. The heavy rains of the past two days made conditions most favourable lor duck and sportsmen received a very pleasant surprise at the number of birds found on swamps, lakes and swollen streams. Sportsmen report that this class of game seemed to he ever present. A large number of licenses lias been issued this season.
A party of Taranaki sportsmen made their annual visit to Taharoa lakes, on the west coast, where they camped for the first week of the season.
Bags so far reported for opening day are Messrs H. C. and J. Evans, 22 ducks in the Oparuri district; A. Stewart, a bag of five pheasants; Messrs Drake. Saville, Shearer, 42 ducks. A total of 15 ducks, five pheasants' and a number’ of quail were secured by Messrs D’Ormsby and Toomey.
