GARDEN PLACE HILL.

SUGGESTION REFUTED. MAYOR’S EMPHATIC DENIAL. An emphatic denial to a suggestion, made by a female questioner, that lie \vguld benefit lindfiClaliy TrOm the cofisumniat.on of the Garden'Place Hill scheme was given by the Mayor, Mr ,), R. Fovv, addressing a meeting of electors at Hamilton Bast last evening. ‘The woman asked when and where Mtf Bow intended to give the ratepayers an Opportunity |o vote in the Uarde/i Place scheme. She asked why the issue was not before the electors. Mf Bow quoted a press report two years Old Stating that he had said .ho was not 'seeking re-election for the purpose of removing the hill and nothing Would be dono till the people wanted it; He stood by that statement- When a scheme was introduced which' would satisfy him; he could go with Confidence to the people and say that U co-uid be done without increasing the rates. Then and only then would he sponsor the scheme. He described Garden Place talk as a political smoke-screen. Little had been heard about it In the council chamber. The questioner asserted that the council planned to remove the only beauty spot left in Victoria Street. She also suggested that Mr FoW stood to benefit personally by the scheme. Mr l’’ow strongly repudiated any such suggestion and reiterated the statement made tW'b years ago when he had clearly shown that the. putting through of Alexandra Street Would destroy the good-Will of 25 years’ operations and would dislocate his business to suefian extent Iliat it would mean practically starting afresh. As commodious a site as lie had at present would be almost impossible to obtain in. the vicinity. ■

“ I strongly Repudiate such an insinuation once and for ail,” he declared amid applause.
