HINTON’S GULLY SCHEME

GOOD PROGRESS MADE. EXCAVATION OF lIILL. An advanced stage has been reached in the reconstruction of the Hinton’s Gully road on the llamiltonMorrinsville main highway and the final stages of the work should be put in hand in the course of the next month. The completion of the excavation is in sight and the formation of the new deviation, which will eliminate the notorious hill road on the .Morrinsville side of the gully is progressing satisfactorily. The heavy rain hampered work considerably and some damage was caused to the newly-formed road through scouring. However, there has been no major handicap to the scheme. The main gang is at present engaged on cutting away the OCW't. bluff of tin hill on the western side through which the road will pass in the form of a culling, the spoil being removed by lorries and distributed across the depth of Hie gully to build up the road to its new level. The Silvcrdalc Hoad which enters the gully from a northerly direction is at present closed but it is intended to build it up to the level of the new highway and retain the junction. When Hie scheme is completed poplar trees are lo be planted along Hie banks to prevent any subsidence or scouring.
