YEAR OF PROGRESS
HAMILTON ORPHANS’ CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. With indications pointing to another successful season, the fifteenth annual meeting of the Hamilton Orphans Club was held in the Winter Show Concert Hall, last evening, the president, Mr A. E. Sandford, presiding over a good attendance. A successful year was reviewed in the annual report, which mentioned that at the final function of last year’s session there was an 243. There was a crease n " •the jupffPwMbu??snip during the year, !*l*Ptotal now standing at 120. r During the past session, the club paid official visits to kindred clubs in the surrounding districts, Cambridge, Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Te Awamutu and Tauranga Orphans’ Clubs, and each of these clubs, in turn reciprocated by paying a return visit to Hamilton Club. The Morrinsville Orphans’ Club organised a combined meeting of the various clubs in the Waikato and surrounding districts. The Hamilton committee considered the idea a progressive move •in Orphandom and the club was represented by the president and 24 members. The meeting decided to make this an annual function and this year’s combined meeting would be held in Cambridge, when it was hoped the function would prove even a greater success.
A warm tribute was paid in the report to the work of the club’s orchestra under the baton of Mr J. T. Battersby, while appreciative reference was also made to the assistance rendered by the performers at the various club functions. The statement of accounts disclosed a credit balance of £l3 11s 5d for the year and, with the report, was adopted.
Eleotlon of Officers. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: Guardian, Dr. F. D. Pinfold; president, Mr A. E. Sandford; vice-presidents, Messrs H. J. Ferguson, W. S. Dingle, A. M. Bisley, 11. J. McMullan, L. Faville, A. Grant, R. T. Reid, R. R. Paterson; committee, Messrs E. H. Quill, W. Watkins, A. G. Wheeler, A. Grant, 11. R. Neas, N. Rawlings; lion, secretary, Mr W. A. Schultz; hon. treasurer, Mr A. C. Watkins; auditors, Messrs Walsh and Reisterer.
The appointment of a conductor and pianist was left to the committee. Eulogistic reference to the work of Mr H. J. Ferguson, the llrst president of the Hamilton Club and a member for the past 15 years, was made by several speakers and Mr Ferguson was appointed a life member of the club. There was a long discussion on the most suitable evening for club nights and it was unanimously decided to meet, fortnightly on Saturday evenings. It was decided to recommend to the committee that opening night be on May 11. Several members referred to last, year’s successful season and all paid a tribute to 'the work and help of the president, Mr A. E. Sandford.
The annual meeting took the form of a social evening this year for the llrst time, the attendance of 50 being entertained to supper.
