STRUCK BY TRAIN.
RAILWAY PORTER KILLED. . FATALITY. AT WANGANUI. . (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Wednesday. A railway porter, Mr John Ross, aged 38, married with four ohlldren, was killed by -the WellingtonWanganui express near the Taupo Quay railway crossing at four o’olock this afternoon. Mr Ross was employed to-day as an assistant In a shunting gang at the Wanganui railway yards. Mr Robert Kerr, who was in charge of the gang, was preparing a mixed train for departure to Hawera at 4.15. He was being helped by Mr Ross. Pending the arrival of the engine from the sheds they went to the shunters’ hut. They then followed one another out of th'e but to oheck the points on the far side of the main line. Mr Kerr was in front and Mr Ros 3 a few yards behind. Neither noticed the approach of the express from Aramoho and Mr Kerr,, looking back after orossing the line, saw Mr Ross being struck by the engine'. The train was brought to a standstill, but the unfortunate man’s body was seriously mangled.. : Mr Ross had been in Wanganui since June, 1933..
