LIBERATION OF GAME.
AUCKLAND DISTRICT ACTIVITIES. SEASON’S PROSPECTS BRIGHT. Following the close of the 1934 season, the council purchased and liberated 249 birds at an average oost of 7s 6d each, stated 'the annual report of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, presented at the annual meeting in Hamilton last evening. These birds will have had time to breed once In the wild state before the coming season opens, so that the increase in the number available to shooters must be considerably more than 249. In addition, 500 young birds, supplied by Mr T. Wise, and 278 grown birds purchased from other breeders after inspection by the ranger, were liberated during February and March, making a total for the year, of 1027 birds. Due to quick transport by car, the birds have been confined to boxes for a minimum of time, and consequently have been fresh when liberated. The condition of the birds lias been favourably commented upon by many sub-socielics. The general dry conditions during the breeding season have had excellent results, and the prospects for the coining season are very bright. The ranger reports that it is quite common for him to flush 12 to 20 birds in a day’s journey round the country, and clubs endorse the view that birds are more in evidence now than for many years past. Californian and Australian also greatly increased, the increase being most noticeable in those districts .where birds have been almost “scarce” previously.
