THE TWIN SISTERS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—An article by the Associated Chambers of Commerce states in Wednesday’s Times that public opinion lhas readied consternation point at the way the Rural Mortgage Final Adjustment 'Bill has been dealt with. Sir, I might ask, who are the publio in this instance who are rearing on their 'hind legs in holy horror lest a. poor farmer gets a bone with a little meat on it? The majority of the members of that association are men who just waddle along to their oifloe, with the day well on, full of the best of the world’s goods, in a cloud of tobacco smoke, and there pass resolutions which are in reality the germs of a revolution.' From my experience, there Is no need for them to get so excited, as there is at present no surety that the poor farmer is going to get something for nothing; but. there is every chance that the boot will be on the other 'foot.
There was, in my opinion, no need for another Bill. The mortgagee had protection in the former Bill. If the law had been dispensed with justice to all concerned no one would have got off without paying the major part of / interest. What a contrast are these howlers who are afraid they might have a taste of the bitter medicine the farmer and his family have had since the low prices have ruled. On the one hand, the farmer has done half a day’s work before these howlers are out of bed, and another half day while the gentlemen play a game of bowls or hie away to their club to enjoy themselves, and the poor, hard-worked cockie goes to his well-earned rest, or his nightmare of the fat man chasing him off the farm.
Regarding the 20 per cent. Mr Coates was giving the farmers, he certainly would have to earn- it. At that, the mortgagor would not be half paid. Confiscation, they say. What rot i—l am, etc., W. JARVIS. Frankton, April 5, 1935.
