WOOL FIRMER

CHRISTCHURCH SALE.

INCREASE UP TO Ild.

VERY KEEN COMPETITION

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday

Fine wools advanced by Id to IJd a pound and crossbreds up to id a pound on March values at the fourth and final Christchurch sale of the season held this afternoon. It was the keenest auction of the series. The Continental demand was exceptionally strong and sot the pace from the first to the last lot.

I’he catalogue of 11,590 bales was much larger than usual for this sale, The increase was accounted for by the large amount of carry-over wool, which included a good percentage of fleece wools. The buying points were fairly distributed with French buyers calling the tune and taking the bulk of the offering suited to their requirements. Time after time bidding disclosed great elasticity in Continental limits. Bradford buyers also played a big part in stimulating competition, and took a big proportion of the wool sold. Japan was operating and a little wool was bought for Germany. The New Zealand mills have had the bulk of their orders filled at earlier auctions, but were fairly active on super lots. A small proportion of the offering was purchased by local fellmongering firms and It was significant that a small proportion of the catalogue was purchased for private buyers speculating on the market. Advance In Fine Wools. The advance for fine wools was up to lid a pound, as compared with the March sale in Canterbury. Crossbreds averaged an advance of up to id a pound on the March basis. As compared with the North Island sales immediately preceding this one crossbreds were from par to id a pound better. All classes of wool shared in the advances.

The top prioe of the sale was 12id per lb. paid for six bales of super halfbred ewe. Two other halfbred lots brought 12d per lb. Four bales of half-bred brought llfd and a similar price was received for 18 bales. The top price for Corriedale wool was 12d, paid for six bales. Two other lots brought Hid. The"top price for Merino wool was . llid paid for a super lot of six bales. Crossbred brooight *hp to 7id, that figure being bid for six bales of hogget wool.
