SCOURGE OF-CANCER

CURABLE OASES. OPINION OF LONDON SURGEON. “There Is no doubt at all that cancer 13 curable to-day.’’ 'Mr J. P. Lockhart-Mummery, the Harley Street surgeon, who Is a recognised authority on the disoaso and chairman of tiie executive committee of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, made this statement at a luncheon at St. Mark’s Hospital, London.

“There are,” said Mr LockhartMummery, “a large number of people walking about the world to-day, and living active lives, who have been cured of cancer by operation as long ago as i2 or 15 years. “We surgeons do not admit any case of cancer as having been cured unless the patient is well live years after treatment.

“Our statistics during the last six years show that when the disease is detected in the early stages, and removed by modern methods, close on 100 per cent of the patients arc cured, and that when we take all the cases operated on in this hospital, the early and the late cases, the percentage of cures is nearly 50 per cent. “Tho sccrot of cancer is being chased from one hiding place to another, and I do not think it will be very long now before our knowledge of It will bo complete. This should surely result in great Improvements in our methods of treating or preventing it, and possibly of doing so without the necessity of operating."
