IN THE GARDEN
A GOOD POTATO CROP. The account below is taken from a recent issue of the English periodical, Amateur Gardening. Headers will see that wonderful results have keen obtained, in the matter of weight per set, but not in the matter of area of ground used. “In the potato-growing competition organised by the Biggin Hill Horticultural Association, Mr G. J. Howick succeeded in growing i23AI h of pota'toes from lib of seed, consisting of ten sets, planted whole. The variety was Dunbar Cavalier. The 12311 b consisted of ten roots of potatoes, each root weighing approximately 121 b. Tlie sets were planted over six feel apart early in the season, with a little leaf mould and farmyard manure under them. The plants were earthed up week by week until each was surrounded by a mould of earth five feet in diameter and about two feet high. A little sulphate of ammonia was sprinkled round each plant, and some liquid manure given during dry weather. The size of the plot devoted to their cultivation was Iwmlyseven feet by fifteen feet-"
