OBITUARY.

MR. A. J. CLARKIN. A resident of the Hamilton district over half-a-century ago, Mr. Alfred James (Fred) Clarkin died at his residence, Glarkin’s Road, Fairfield, yesterday aged 62 years. Born in Panmure, the late Mr. •Clarkin was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Clarkin who arrived In the Waikato about 58 years ago. He was one of the first pupils to attend the Catholic Convent School in Hamilton when It was opened in 1881. After working for some years in Rotorua and Waihi he returned to Hamilton about 30 years ago and founded the carrying business of Clarkin and Simms.

For many years Mr, Clarkin was prominent In Rugby football in Hamilton as a player and life-long supporter. He represented Waikato for some years and was founder and president of the Marist Old Boys Club. The late Mr. Clarkin was also associated with the Waikato Hunt and various agricultural shows. He married Miss Mary Sampson, of Wa'ihi, who predeceased him 25 years ago. He is survived by three daughters and two sons; Sister Madge Clarkin, of the Waikato Hospital staff, Miss Freda Clarkin, of Claudelands, Miss Marion Clarkin, of Newcastle, New South Wales, and Messrs. Stanley and Pat Clarkin of Hamilton. MRS. J. I. WASHER. The. dealh occurred yesterday at her residence in Epsom, Auckland, of Mrs. Jane Isabella Washer, widow of the late Mr. William Washer, who was one of 11 1 c pioneer farmers of the lloroliu district. She was aged 84 years. Mr. and Mrs. Washer settled in Horotiu about 50 years ago, 'Mr. Washer having owned most of ilia property on which the Horotiu Freezing Works are now built. Mr. Washer died about 10 years ago when Mrs. Washer went to live in Auckland, she leaves a large adult family.
