NEW EXPORT MARKETS
The remarks of Mr J. S. Jessep, vice-president of the New Zealand Sheep Owners’ Federation, at a meeting of Haivke’s Bay farmers, advocate a policy which commands our unqualified support and approval. Any efforts which have as their, object the expansion of existing export markets and the development of new ones, are worthy of whole-hearted support. This is the object Mr Jessep has in view, and although he has allowed his enthusiasm for this cause to blind him to the values of other methods of rehabilitation, the broad principles of his argument are sound and convincing.
The search for new export markets is a task which we have persistently advocated ever since depressed prices increasing production first raised the question of limitation of existing markets. The only practical retort to the menace of a quota in the market which we have hitherto regarded as unrestrictedly our own would be to place ourselves in a position where it would not be essential to flood the British market. That objective can be best realised by obtaining, developing and consolidating new markets.
