The North Island section of the district competition in export lambs, promoted by the Meat Producers’ Board has attracted entries this season from the Waikato, Hawkes (Bay, Gisborne, Southern Hawkes 'Bay, Wairarapa, Feilding, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki districts, and the lambs which are being shipped to London for the 'final adjudication total 405 in number from the nine districts. The bulk of the entries will be shipped on the “Rangitane" which is due to reach London on January 23. The Manawatu lambs, have already been despatched on the “Waiwera,” and the Taranaki and Wanganui lambs will be taken on the “Mahana,” due in London on February 1. All the entries are to be displayed at Smifhfleld and judged by a panel of well-known authorities on the subject, whose detailed reports are always received tvith great interest in New Zealand. District Field Days. A number of “field days" arranged by the Agricultural and Pastoral Associations in the various districts add to the interest in the competition, for which the Meat Producers’ Board offers a perpetual challenge shield for each Island, to be awarded to the best district display, as well as lliree prizes in each Island for the her' individual lots of lambs'which arc shipped. The competition lr- ■ become so well established that Mitional prizes are frequently dona.ed from other quarters. For instance, the Lyttelton Harbour Board has shown Its practical desire to encourage the best quality production in 'Canterbury lambs by offering a solid silver challenge cup for the best pen of lambs from North Canterbury district, judged in London. A challenge cup is also awarded by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company for the best pen of lambs selected for inclusion in the district display, killed at their Belfast works, and the Canterbury A. and P. Association has provided six prizes for the best pens of lambs entered from the district on the hooks at the works. The entries so far in the district competition from the South Island this season are from Nelson, Marlborough, North Canterbury, MidCanterbury, South Canterbury, Otago, Southland and East Southland. As a further encouragement to the production of high quality stock for export, the Meat Producers’ Board will donate a number of prizes for competition at the Royal Agricultural Society’s Show at Invercargill this month, totalling over '£Bo in value, for lambs and porker and baconer pigs most suitable for the export trade.
