IN ANSWER TO MR YOUNG.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The -statement made by the Minister of Employment, the Hon. J. A. Young, which appeared in 1 hutsdav’s Times, would be read with much Interest by the public and the unem--1 The Minister states that the care of the unemployed was one of the board a chief concerns and responsibilities, and that the administration of relief was a big undertaking. The Job .is undoubtedly a big one, but I think the Minister doe's not go far enough. He should see that when an unemployed party Is put on to a particular duty lie should not be interfered with by upstarts” who have a pull with the local authorities. A case was known only a short time ago where a worker doing his job conscientiously and well came in contact with a "highbrow” who resented Hie relief worker being in control. The result was the exit of the relief worker. ’ Of course that unfortunate relief worker has no feelings! Another side of the relief quest on which can be looked into by the Minister is this: There is occasionally a demand by a local body for men to do overtime, and it is most noticeable that Jhe same men generally do it. They are the two or three-day men; the family man with five or more children gets very little encouragement from the heads, for what reason It is hard to know; but nevertheless is most unfair to Lhe man with a large family 1° kee P- . 4, C 1 respectfully suggest that the Minister of Employment should give these and similar matters consideration, and lie will earn the thanks of numbers of relief workers.—l am, etc., Hamilton, Dec. 14, 1934.
