CANADA’S POLITICS
. ELECTION NEXT YEAR. AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE. THE STEVENS EPISODE. (Empire Press 'Union). OTTAWA, November 11. The Canadian Parliament will not meet until the new year—probably late In January. There had been much speculation on the probability of X fall session and an early election, but It is apparent now that the House of Commons elected in the summer of 1930 will sit its full five years—an uncommon occurrence in this country. Political observers believe the election now will not be called until late summer or early fall. ■ Undoubtedly when Parliament meets the Liberals will demand dissolution and will endeavour to embarrass the Government in Its business if an immediate election js not granted However, the Prime Minister, Mr Bennett, has a good majority, and it Is extremely unlikely that he can be stampeded. Liberal confidence has been raised to a high pitch by tiie results of federal by-elections and provincial contests during the past year ' The political sensation of the year was the resignation'from the Bennett cabinet of Mr 11. 11. • Stevens, his Minister of Trade and Commerce, who gave up at the same time chairmanship of the Royal Commission on Price Spreads and Mass Buying. Mr Bennett and Mr Stevens parted company over a pamphlet issued by the latter- — and withdrawn after a few -copies got out—which the Prime -Minister held, pre-judged the evidence taken by the Commission and by the Committee of the House which was its original form. Mr Stevens retorted that in his investigation of price spreads and mass buying he had been impeded and handicapped by some of his cabinet 0015 leagues. He offered his resignation, which was accepted. 'He is continuing to give the Government general support, and remains in the Conservative party.
