JEW AND GENTILE
“In my opinion,” writes Dr. B. Bidney, ih the Ziohist Record, “the peculiar attitude adopted toward the Jews depends ultimately upon the classification of humanity into Jews and Gentiles.
“ Originally a religious i distinction, the name has lived on even when religion is no longer a distinguishing characteristic. The direct result has been, that the Jews have always been judged As a unit or group and not as individuals, as is the case with other minorities. This attitude produces the phenomenon of anti-Semitism, which is nothing but indiscriminate prejudice against the Jews as a people.'
“ The Gentiles can solve their problem only by first recognising the right of all their citizens to retain their identity and religious and cultural institutions. When it becomes more widely held that truth is not the possession of one group or epoch, that it is something revealed and discovered in time, in a process in which all nations participate, then I believe there' will be greater toleration and mutual respect. ,
a The greatest obstacle toward this mutual co-operation between Jews and Gentiles is the existence of Jews and Gentiles. If only the Jews were reckoned as one among the nations and not chosen for special humiliation and persecution by the others, then I believe the difficulties would be greatly diminished.”
