Mixed Doubles.—Perry and Miss Round defeated Hopman and Mrs Hopman, 6—3, 6—4. t , In- the singles final Perry and Craw- ' ford both began steadily. Crawford led 5-—2 in the first set, as the result of deep drives to Perry’s backhand. Perry levelled the score at 5—5, but ) Crawford captured the set .when Perry lost his third service. Crawford made a number of bad errors in the second set, when Perry applied-more pace. Crawford's sliced shot to Perry’iS backhand worried the Englishman, and Crawford won the third set comfortably. Perry was most accurate in the fourth set, while Crawford was again' erratic. A grand struggle came in the final set, when Crawford captured Perry’s service for a 4—2 lead, but Perry retaliated and evened at 4—4, . and also led at 5 —4, with his own service to follow, which he lost as the result of volleying errors. The tennis at this stage was of the highest order. * Crawford’s baseline play was superior and he won the set amid deafening cheering. Crawford won entirely on his merits. His backhand, formerly vulnerable, withstood Perry’s fiercest drives.
Miss Round overwhelmed. Mrs. Westacott. She did not ‘ allow the Queensland player to bring her devastating forehand into action. Miss Round carried far too much speed and repeatedly left her opponent standing.
Mafer and Hopman, who provided an anti-climax after their brilliant .display yesterday, were to-day very patcliy. Hopman also played badly in the mixed final, in which the individual ‘ brilliance of Perry and Miss Round won the day.
