The Flying Scotsman established a British railway record, travelling from King’s Gross to Leeds, 186 miles, in two hours 31 minutes, at an average ■speed of 75 and a maximum of 944miles per hour. During the return journey the train attained 974 miles hourly, Britain’s greatest Passenger train speed, but the average speed was lower. The trip was undertaken *to test a steam train against the diesel-engined Hamburg Flyer, which did the trip of 178 miles to Berlin in two hours 18 minutes.
