LOSS OF £51,310.

DRURY LANE, THEATRE, LONDON

PANTOMIME TO BE STAGED

LONDON, September 20

Fears for the future of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, were set at rest by Mr H. M. Tennent, the general manager, when he said that Drury Lane is definitely to continue as a playhouse. The fears were expressed following publication of the theatre’s accounts. They show a trading loss for the year ended June last of £35,147. Rent and other items bring the total loss to £51,310. The accounts also reveal that “certain proceedings are pending concerning an alleged breach of contract, and provision has been made for the costs incurred up to June 30 last.”

Mr Tennent said that the theatre — claimed to be the best known and most imposing in Britain —which has been closed since the early part, of last June, will reopen on Christmas Eve with Julian Wylie's pantomime "Cinderella." “There is no time to stage any attraction before the pantomime," Mr Tennent said, “and the directors are now concentrating on Hinting an important new show to put on about next March.” One suggestion is that Jack Buchanan should star at Drury Lane in a musical production. In any event, that could not he until tlie autumn of 1035. Jn view of .Charles B. Cochran’s recent announcement that he iias secured an important new musical show from the Continent which will require a large theatre, there lias been some speculation whether lie may not he seen at Drury Lane as a producer in the New Year. There have been some tentative conversations in this connection, but no dellnlte plan has been made.
