OVER FOND OF BOOKS.
CITY OFFICIAL’S ADMISSION. STOLE 224. VALUED AT £6l. METHOD DESCRIBED. (By Telegraph.—Pre«s Association.) DUNEDIN, Monday. In the Police Court Henry Cecil Beckingsale (34), the city corporation’s eleotrlcal inspector, admitted that in the last two years he had stolen 224 books, valued at £6l, from various shops, ascribing his conduct to a fondness for books and being unable to resist the temptation of taking them. The police stated that accused would order periodicals from different shops and call -for them with a brief bag. While in the shops he would select books he intended to .steal, move them to the hack of the cases, and then slip them into his bag. All the books were of good quality and of a high standard. When' his home was searched 550 new books were found in his possession.. . Counsel said that- only 224 books bad been stolen. Accused, had a substantial library of his own. He was remanded until this afternoon.
