The London crew, leading easily from start to finish, - ,defeated the Union Club’s eight (Wanganui) In the • Challenge Cup race at the Henley-on-Yarra regatta yesterday 'by three lengths. The conditions were perfect. London had defeated Hawthorn in the heats, and Union had defeated University. In the first semi-final Union had defeated Mercantile. London's time in the Anal was 4m. 3'7s.
Sculling results are as follows: Yarra Challenge Cup.—First heat: Abbott (Petone), 1; Peppier (Yarra). 2; Power (Melbourne), 3. Won by three lengths. 1 Second heat: Smith (Waitemata), 1; Heidrioh (South Australia). 2. Won by six lengths. Third heat: Turner. (New South Wales), holder of the cup, 1; Tippling (New South Wales), 2.,Fourth heat: Hausen (Footscray), 1. Semi-final: Turner, 1; Abbott, 2; Peppier, 3. .Second semifinal: Smith, 1; Hansen, 2. Ten' thousand people were present at the Ballarat Oval last evening for the termination of the band championships.- New standards of brilliant play ing were established. With its points in the A grade the Melbourne Fire-Brigades Band secured final possession of the 'Besson Shield. Awards in A grade were:—Selections Nos. 1 and 2 tests: Hawthorn, 137 and 141 points, 1; Woolston, 144 and 129 points, 2; Brunswick, 136 and 136 points, 3; Melbourne Fire Brigade, 271 points, ,4. Quickstep.—Melbourne Fire Brigade, 184 points, 1; Woolston and Malvern Tramways, 180 points, each, dead heat, 2. Aggregate*' —Molbourno Firs BNgade, 455; Hawthorn, 454; Woolston, 453 ; Malvern' Tramways, 448. The Judge* Mr. Stephen Yorke, of England, said the standard of the playing was equal to the best in England and the task of Judging was very .x----aoting. '
