PINEAPPLES GROWN

FRUIT IN HAMILTON. REMARKABLE PLANTS. Although thousands of miles south of their normal clime, four hardy pineapple plants have thrived and, for three years, borne fruit in the glasshouse of Mr W. S. IHggins, Tuhikaramea Road, Frankton. From the seeds contained in the top of an imported pineapple the plants had their beginning about eight years ago, and, although about five years was required before they reached maturity Mr Begins is now able to enjoy fruit equal to any imported from Australia or the Islands. The plants are hardy specimens about two feet in height, with the tough exotic foliage of the normal specimen. No artificial means were taken to heat the glass-house, though, as the result of an open aspect, its contents received more than a normal amount of sunlight. Almost tropical temperatures prevailed. It was five years before the first fruits were obtained, and although small these mojje than justified Mr Higgins’ hopes. Last year, however, there was a considerable improvement in the pineapples, which were pronounced everywhere to be delicious. This ye'ar they were indistinguishable from the imported fruit, and, although of only medium size, possessed excellent taste and texture. The fruit does not appear to be seasonal, and at the present time, aflei two pineapples have been gathered, several further shoots are coming forward.
