RECORD SHATTERED.
AUCKLAND TO HAMILTON. LADY CYCLIST’S FEATFAST TIME FOR DISTANCE. Maintaining a steady pace throughout the 83-mile journey, Mrs E. Harrison, of Panmure, a member of the Auckland Ladies’ Cycle Club, shattered the existing ladies’ cycling record for the Auckland-Hamilton trip to-day by covering the distance in the fast time of 4 hours 22 minutes, unpaced. Mrs Harrison, who is 28 years of age, and has- five children, Auckland post office at 9 a.m., and arrived at the Hamilton post office at 1.22 p.m., after being escorted for several, miles toy riders of the Hamilton Sports Club. Although-tiredj and dusty, Mrs Harrison was none the worse for her gruelling ride, during which she encountered .strong crosswinds. In the final stages of the journey,' between Ngaruawahia and Hamilton, she had - a toad spill, when a motorist forced her off the road, but although cut about the hands, she remounted to cover the distance from Ngaruawahia to her destination in 35 minutes.
It is only nine months ago that Mrs Harrison learnt to ride a bicycle, and since joining the Auckland Ladies’ Cycle Club in May, she has eclipsed the eight-mile record and the club course record. Her latest achivement easily, surpassed Miss Violet Baird’s Auckland-Hamilton time of 5 hours 38 minutes, established in 1933, when she was paced. Miss Baird, who travailed to Hamilton with Mrs Harrison to-day, described the new record as a great feat. Not content with her successful ride to-day, Mrs Harrison will attempt to lower Miss Baird’s time from Auckland to Wellington, 79 hours, 40 minutes, on November 24.
