TE RAPA HORSES.

UNLUCKY AUSTRALIAN TRIP.

TWO COMING BACK,

BOUGHAL AND SIRONA. Two members of M. J. Carroll’s team of four, • Boughal and Sirona, which went across'to Sydney for spring racing on the oilier side, are returning to New Zealand and are expected to arrive early next week. Lion Heart and the two-year-old urac are remaining in Australia in the meantime. The Australian venture of the To Rapa trainer, M. J. Carroll, was dogged With misfortune. On its departure from New Zealand the entire team was in splendid condition and its connections had every reason to anticipate that Iho team would acquit itself well on Australian soil. The horses had been !here only a short lime, however,

when all became affected with laryngitis and were placed out of commission.

An epidemic of laryngitis was prevalent in the district at the time "and Boughal, the star member of the team, nf whom great things were expected, was the first to fall a victim. The big Acre gelding was to have had his first race on a Wednesday when on the Sunday previous a suggestion of coughing was noticed and on the following day the temperature he was running necessitated the calling in of a veterinary surgeon. The trouble was diagnosed as laryngitis and as a safeguard against possible infection the remaining members of the team were inoculated. Despite every care and attention it was not long before the others, Sirona, Lion Heart andvOrac, were down with the trouble. Misfortune With Sirona. Sirona, the three-year-old Gay Shield—Phaola lilly, was the most forward of the quartette on leaving New Zealand and as she is a genuine mudlark her immediate prospects in Sydney appeared decidedly rosy as at the lime the tracks there were practically all affected by heavy- rain. She was to have made her Australian debut at Canterbury Park on August 4 and on tbe Thursday prior to the meeting put up a slashing gallop, which pointed strongly lo her prospects. It •" was significant that a prominent -Australian sporting writer at the time “tipped” her to win her engagement as the result of her track efforts. On the Friday site contracted laryngitis' however, and had to be put aside. Lion Heart (Gay Shield—'Shebang), who is remaining with Orac, was given a run along a couple of weeks ago and although he failed to make any impression on Hie field his present condition apparently is such that he is to be tried further in Australia before being relumed tii the Dominion.
