A SEVEN YEARS’ CONTRACT. FIVE-YEAR-OLD FILM STAR. EFFORTS TO PREVENT SPOILING Details of the unusual contract which governs the life of Shirley Temple, the five-year-old, film star, have been revealed by Mr. Winfield Sheehan, vice-president of Fox Films. Mr. Sheehan said: — “ Shirley has a seven years’ contract at a salary of £'22o a week. “ Under her contract she is forbidden to make any personal appearances either on the stage or in radio or at the pre-views of films. An offer of £I2OO a week for ten weeks of personal appearances was recently rejected. Not to Eat in Public Place.
“ She must not address any public assembly in any circumstances, and she must not cat in a public restaurant. In our studios she is not, allowed to mix with adult players, and all requests for interviews —which •number more than 200 a week are refused.
“ The wisdom of these rules lies in the fact that Shirley can retain her child-like characteristics only if she is brought up in normal child surroundings. In any public place she wouid be a circus attraction and would very soon he spoiled. • “ She Is not allowed to visit even our studio restaurant. In the studio grounds she has her own Bungalow, which consists of a school roam which is aldo a living-room, a dressing-room Which is also a bedroom, a bathioom, and a diet kitchen.
A Perfect Mimic.
“Her contract cares for her physical welfare, her education, and her social life. Her food consists oi vegetables, fruit, and milk. She has a teacher appointed by the Board of Education, and she is' permitted -o mix only with children of her own age.
“She Is only five and cannot read or write, but,she has an amazing memory and is a perfect mimic.
“ For the French version of ‘ Caravan’ we wanted her to recite a ahull speech in .French. She delivered it without a mistake, having the slightest Idea of what it meant.

Constance Bennett is undergoing great anxiety owing to the illness of her husband and threats by gangsters that they will kidnap her adopted son.
“The Night is Yours ” (“ Tiptoes”) is under way with Evelyn Laye and Ramon Novarro in the leads. It is a musical comedy.
Edgar Rice Burroughs is planning to make his own films of his “Tarzan” hooks in future. He has been unable to borrow either Johnny Weissmuller or Buster Crabbe for the title part, so is looking for a hitherto unknown "he-man” to fill the requirements. The first picture in this new series will be “Tarzan in 'Guatemala.”
