CLAIMS OF CURES

PUBLICATION OF LEAFLET. FINE FOR MISLEADING STATEMENT (By Telegraph,—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The publication by James Edward Williams, merchant, of a misleading statement regarding the properties of Pesta St. Bernard oil, resulted in a tine of £5 by Mr Stillwell, S.M. He pleaded guilty. The statement was contained in a leaflet, and, inter alia, claimed to be an alleviation and cure of tuberculosis and other pulmonary diseases. The action was taken by the Health Department under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. The Inspector of Health, in evidence, said he took a sample and it appeared to be mutton bird oil. Counsel for Williams said that Williams 'had taken over the concern from the previous manager, who had compiled the leaflet, but Willliams would accept responsibility. Counsel submitted that the oil had achieved good results, and that the word “cure” was often loosely used.
