AUSTRALIAN ELECTION RESULT.
The result of the Australian elections will occasion no surprise in New Zealand, apart from the uncertainty which is inseparable from any election contest. The Government has been returned, with a slightly reduced majority it is true, but some losses were almost unavoidable. Political restlessness and desire for change often cause doubtful seats to be lost, and the recent election was no exception to this rule. In the result of the voting the Government will find a sufficiently clear mandate from the people for the continuance of its present policy. Of most importance is the approbation thus given to the financial policy which the Government has put into operation. The rejection of Douglas Credit candidates —notwithstanding the fact that it may be ascribed to lack of preparation for the electoral campaign—can be interpreted as an indication of unwillingness to embark upon large scale financial or monetary experiments at the present juncture. Orthodox measures for recovery have been preferred to the untried or the unknown. The policy carried out by the Government during its past term of office has accomplished a definite improvement in Australia’s affairs, and, as is indicated in the comment from other parts of the Empire, the verdict of the electors has met with a very favourable reception. New Zealand "has a particular interest in the return of a strong Government, owing to the unescapable association with the Commonwealth which persists in other countries, and there will be general satisfaction with the return of Mr Lyons and his party.
