SPEED RECORD.

“WIZARD” SMITH’S PLANS. ATTEMPT IN UNITED STATES. | Provided he can get the necessary financial backing, Mr Norman (“Wizard”) Smith plans to take his car, the “F. H. Stewart Enterprise” to Salt Lake City, United States, next month to make an attempt on the world’s land speed record. He estimates that the total expenses would amount to £3OOO in Australian currency. If that sum is not forthcoming, he may exhibit his car at the Melbourne Centenary, and try to raise sufficient money that way to make an attempt next summer. The present record of 272 m.p.h. is held by Sir Malcolm Campbell. In September, at Salt Lake City, Sir Malcolm will try to break his own record. He hopes to reach 300 m.p.h. in his reconditioned “Bluebird.” , Mr Smith would like to be there at the same time as the British speed wizard. „ . ■ . , "I am confident,” Mr Smith said, “that my car will do 285 to 256 miles an hour. If she were streamlined a bit more, I could get a few more miles out of her.
