MUSIC COMPETITIONS.
RECALLS JUDGED.
ELOCUTION, DANCING AND VOCAL. Great, praise was forthcoming from the judges when splendid performances were provided at (tie continuation of the vocal, elocutionary, instrumental and dancing competitions last evening. A number of recalls, mostly in the juvenile sections, reached finality. The Judges are: Dancing, Miss Daphne Knight. Auckland: elocution, Mrs Hartley Baxter, Auckland; vocal and instrumental, Mr Barry Coney, Auckland; brass quarlelles, Mr M. K. Mara, Frankton; dance hands. Mr Alt’ Boyce. Cambridge; Mr I.- Leary, Hamilton; and Miss Daphne Knight. Auckland. Much of the success of the compelilions, which have conlinually drawn large galleries, depends upon Die efllcient staff of otlleiais. The slage managers, Mrs 11. C. Boss, Miss Helen Uevwood and .Messrs 11. Buchanan anil A. 11. Palmy, are s.d an arduous task in keeping Hie performers in preparation for their rails, while a great deal ol work ai-o fails upon the judges Stewards, Mrs A. English. Mrs II- M. Hammond ami Mrs lan Stuart. The Official accompanist is Mr n. Jensen. All's l-\ Kear occupied the outside
ticket box. It needs an enthusiast to carry out this duty on such a cold night! Final decisions made last evening were:— Elocution. Recitation, girls, nine and under, •‘Ann Jupp”—Nina Waite and Shirley Buchanan, equal, 75 points, 1; Patricia Lind 3. i The judge. referred to the great talent that was shown, but deprecated any tendency towards a departure from .“charming naturalness.” Recitation, boys 1 4 and under, own selection: Ronald Wilson, 75 points, 1; Neil Carbon 2, Leo Lichtwark 3, It was, the judge commented, another excellent class, with the articulation of the winner excellent. Recitation, boys, 10 and under, own selection: George Goodwin, 90pts., 1; lan Andrews 2, K. W. Allcock 3. Superlative Praise.
Superlative praise was used by Mrs Baxter in describing the winner’s performance. It was, she said, an outstanding presentation, and despite a few minor faults, well warranted the high mark she had allocated. Recitation, boys 10 and under (“The Angel Dog”), Roy Marsh, 85pts., 1; lan Meitzer, 2; Donald Gibbs, 3. Shakespearean recital, ladies: Miss Wynne James, 89pts., 1; Miss Roma Garratt, 80pts., 2; Miss K. Goodwin, 78p15., 3. * Eulogistic reference was made by Mrs Baxter to Miss James’ performance, while the class generally she considered to be strong. Recitation, girls 12 and under, own selection: Patricia White, 78pts., i; Nathalie Sweeney, 2; Betty Binns, 3. The possessor of a pleasing stage personality, the winner, Mrs Baxter commented, gave a promising rendering, while only one point separated tlic girl who tilled second position. Vocal.
Baritone solo (“A Song of Cheer"): The only competitor, Mr J. G. Brown, was adjudicated to a second award. Action song, boy or girl, own selection: W. Bonnar 87pts., 1; Betty Spiro, B(lpts., 2; Muriel Whittaker, 85pts„ 3. Song in character, boy or girl, own selection: Una D. Mateer, 87pts., 1; Josie Bonnar, 86pts., 2; Muriel Whittaker, 85pts., 3. “Tlie winner’s performance was very dignified and very beautiful, with tiie costume excellent,” commented Mr Barry Coney. National song, ladies, any voice, own selection: Mrs C. F. O’Connor, 75pts„ i; Miss Dorothy Robson, 73pts., 2; Miss N. C. Jenkins, 70pts., 3. “The performances generally were very good and showed improvement on the afternoon," said the judge. Instrumental. Piano solo, 10 years and under (“The Juggler"), Graham Prescott, 92pts., 1; Margaret Ariell, 85pts., 2.
